Camping in Yukon

Yukon camping is the road-trip dream — 41 territorial campgrounds along the Alaska, Klondike and Dempster Highways, all walk-up only and refreshingly cheap ($20/night, includes firewood). The window is short (mid-May to mid-September) and the daylight is endless. Bring bear spray.

Kluane National Park is the Yukon's showpiece — home to Canada's highest peak (Mount Logan at 5,959 metres), the largest non-polar icefields in the world, and grizzly bears fishing for salmon in glacier-fed rivers. The Kathleen Lake campground is spectacularly situated at the foot of the King's Throne, and the day hike up gives you views of an icescape that stretches to the horizon. Flightseeing tours from Haines Junction over the icefields are a once-in-a-lifetime splurge.

The Klondike Highway from Whitehorse to Dawson City follows the path of the 1898 gold rush, and Dawson itself is a living time capsule: dirt streets, saloon-front buildings, and Diamond Tooth Gertie's — Canada's oldest casino — where you can try your luck after a day on the trail. Camp at the Yukon River campground right in town, or drive out to Tombstone Territorial Park where jagged granite peaks and tundra valleys create a landscape that's been called 'Canada's Patagonia.'

The Alaska Highway section through Yukon is the classic northern road trip. Campgrounds at Congdon Creek, Pine Lake and Marsh Lake are strung along a route that passes emerald lakes, mountain passes and the occasional bison herd crossing the road. In June, the midnight sun means you can hike at 11pm in full daylight — an experience that's disorienting, magical, and uniquely Yukon.
