Camping in Prince Edward Island

PEI has more campsites per capita than any other province. Prince Edward Island National Park lines the north shore with red-sand beaches; provincial parks and dozens of private campgrounds fill in around Cavendish, Brackley and Stanhope. Season is short (June–September) but the warm Gulf water makes it Canada's beach-camping capital.

Prince Edward Island National Park is where red sand meets ocean in the most photogenic way possible. The north shore campgrounds at Cavendish, Stanhope and Brackley put you within a two-minute walk of beaches that stretch for kilometres — the water is genuinely warm by Canadian standards (20°C+ in August), and the sunsets over the Gulf of St. Lawrence paint the sky in colours that match the red cliffs below.

Beyond the beach, PEI is Anne of Green Gables country. The Green Gables Heritage Place in Cavendish is a literary pilgrimage, and the entire island has a storybook quality — rolling farmland, red dirt roads, lobster suppers in church basements, and a pace of life that forces you to slow down. Camp at Cabot Beach Provincial Park for a quieter alternative to Cavendish, with views across Malpeque Bay (yes, those Malpeque oysters).

PEI's size is its superpower: you can cycle the entire Confederation Trail from tip to tip in a few days, camping at provincial parks along the way. The island's culinary scene punches well above its weight — the Lobster Suppers at New Glasgow and St. Ann's are institutions, and Charlottetown's restaurant row on Victoria Row is worth a night off from camp cooking.

Season: June – mid-September · Reservations: Parks Canada (national park) and Tourism PEI for provincial parks
